Ancient Coin Denominations

On this page you will find descriptions and comparable values for many ancient coin denominations from the Roman, Greek, and Byzantine coin periods. This list is not all inclusive as there are denominations which are not listed. Many coins are referred to by there diameters i.e.: AE 1, AE 2, AE3 ... AE 16 etc. due to their original names not being know at this time.

Greek coin denominations:

Term Definition
Dekadrachm = in value to 10 drachms. Minted in silver.
Tetradrachm = in value to 4 drachms. Minted in silver.
Didrachm = in value to 2 drachms. Minted in silver.
Drachm = in value to 6 obols. Minted in silver.
Tetrobol = in value to 4 obols. Minted in silver.
Triobol (Hemidrachm) = in value to 3 obols. Minted in silver.
Diobol = in value to 2 obols. Minted in silver.
Trihemiobol = in value to 1.5 obols. Minted in silver.
Obol Minted in silver.
Triartemorion = in value to 3/4 obol. Minted in silver.
Hemiobol = in value to 1/2 obol. Minted in silver.
Trihemitartemorion = in value to 3/8 obol. Minted in silver.
Tetartemorion = in value to 1/4 obol. Minted in silver.

Roman coin denominations:

Term Definition
As obv. - Head of Janus. rev. - Prow of a galley. Mark of value on coin  = 1. Value of coin = 12 unciae. Minted in bronze.
Semis obv. - Head of Saturn. rev. - Prow of galley. Mark of value on coin = S. Value of coin = 6 unciae. Minted in bronze.
Triens obv. - Head of Minerva. rev. - Prow of galley. Mark of value on coin = 4 pellets. Value of coin = 4 unciae. Minted in bronze.
Quadrans obv. - Head of Hercules. rev. - Prow of galley. Mark of value on coin = 3 pellets. Value of coin = 3 unciae. Minted in bronze.
Sextans obv. - Head of Mercury. rev. - Prow of galley. Mark of value on coin = 2 pellets. Value of coin = 2 uniae. Minted in bronze.
Uncia obv. - Head of Roma. rev.- Prow of galley. Mark of value on coin = 1 pellet. Value of coin = 1 uncia. Minted in bronze.
   
Gold Aureus = in value to 25 silver denarii.
Gold Quinarius = in value to 12.5 denarii.
Silver Denarius = in value to 16 copper asses.
Silver Quinarius = in value to 8 copper asses.
Orichalcum Sestertius = in value to 4 copper asses.
Orichalcum Dupondius = in value to 2 copper asses.
Copper As = in value to 4 copper quadrantes.
Orichalcum Semis = in value to 2 copper quadrantes.

Byzantine coin denominations:

Term Definition
Gold Solidus = in value to 24 silver Siliqua.
Gold Semissis = in value to 1/2 of a Solidus, or 12 Siliqua.
Gold Tremissis = in value to 1/3 of a Solidus, or 8 Siliqua.
Silver Miliarense = in value to 1/12 of a Solidus, or 2 Siliqua.
Silver Siliqua = in value to 1/24 of a Solidus, or 7.5 Follis.
Copper Follis = in value to 1/180 of a Solidus, or 40 Nummus.
Copper Nummus = in value to 1/7,200 of a Solidus, or 1/40 of a Follis.
   
Lightweight Solidus = in value to 23 Siliqua.
Lightweight Solidus = in value to 22 Siliqua.
Lightweight Solidus = in value to 20 Siliqua.
Half Tremissis = in value to 2 Miliarensia. (Under Justin II)
   
Half Siliqua = in value to 150 nummi.
Quarter Siliqua = in value to 75 nummi.
   
Three-quarter Follis = in value to 30 nummi.
Half Follis = in value to 20 nummi.
Dodecanummium (Copper) = in value to 12 nummi.
Decanummium (Copper) = in value to 10 nummi.
