Roman Coinage
of the Turbulent Years
page #3
Listed below are additional coins of the Roman Imperial
period, from the year 235 A.D. to the year 284 A.D. One Emperor that was
successful during this period was Gordian III. He improved living conditions for
the citizens of the Empire, but in 241 A.D. when the Persians invaded, Gordian
III and his loyal Praetorian Prefect Timesthius led the armies to retake Syria
and Mesopotamia. When Timesthius died Gordian replaced him with Philip, who
corrupted the armies logistics system thus allowing the soldiers to go hungry.
He placed the blame for this on Gordian, early in 244 A.D. Gordian was murdered
by his troops and Philip took the throne.
